Top singles of 2008
#1 Viva la VidaColdplay
What can you say for this band? Besides the song being played on a iPod ad.
Its a epic song. Love the cello and drumming to this song.
Now a controversy about the song.
Version 1 of the music video is absolutely beautiful, its watching a moving painting.
Version 2 of the music video is very old school and creative. Seeing Chris Martin dress up as a king and wandering through the city. Its directed by Anton Cobijn.

#2 Lovely Allen/Milkshake – Holy F**k
Been a great year for this band besides having a offensive name.
Their music is a different matter.
Just a great song to dance to. Also Milkshake is not the Kelis song.
Lovely Allen is one of those songs you just got to dance to.

#3 That’s Not My Name – The Ting Tings
Hit #1 in the UK Singles chart.
Great catchy electro pop by this British male/female duo. I recommend the Tom Neville Remix.

#4 Warwick Avenue – Duffy
I decided to pick this one instead of Mercy which has been played alot.
This one I really like alot, it has that sad feeling kind of sad.
Has that 60s British sound.

#5 Bye Bye Bye – Plants & Animal
Breakthrough song from this band from Montreal. No its not the Nsync cover.
Its such a great song from an amazing album.
Video was live at Osheaga in Montreal

#6 Chasing Pavements – Adele
2008 seems to be a trend for UK female artist having that soulful sound.
One being Adele who is very talented. This song just has that emotion about love gone wrong.
The video is very amazingly beautiful and tragic at the same time.

#7 Paper Planes – M.I.A.
M.I.A. finally hit it big thanks to a movie.
Its one of those rap/hip-hop track that isn’t about bling bling, guns and other stereotypical stuff that happens in American hip-hop.
The only thing controversial is the gun shots which I find is not a big deal.

#8 4 Minutes – Madonna feat. Justin Timberlake & Timbaland
She has done it again with this song.
Shows she can still bust a move in her 50s.
Fun and you can do whatever dance moves to this song.
Music video is abit weird.

#9 No Air – Jordin Spark and Chris Brown
Its one of those song that I had no interest when it was a big hit in the US. But if following the UK music charts and listen to UK online radio station. This song would grow on you after like a few listens.
Shows that Jordin can really sing and branch out of the American Idol stuff.
Song has alot of meaning on love and relationships.
Best remix is the Jason Nevins version.

#10 Tessellate – Tokyo Police Club
Great track from a band that sounds like they are maturing with their music.
Nice indie pop song.

#11 American Boy – Estelle feat. Kanye West
Estelle’s first #1 single in the UK which is a breakthrough hit in the UK and US.
Very catchy tune, just like the part when Kanye drops the F-bomb.
Maybe Estelle did find her American Boy.

#12 I Need A Life – Born Ruffians
Amazing track from the album Red, Yellow and Blue.
Music video is a little bizarre.
Such a great catchy tune from Midland, Ontario

#13 Willow Tree – Chad VanGaalen
A haunting track about death but sung so lovely by Chad Vangaalen.
Has that Neil Young-esque sound to it.

#14 Cheapest Key – Kathleen Edwards
Great rocking track by the Ottawa native.
Love the part “B is for bulls**t and you fed me stuff”

#15 In Search Of The Youth Crew – Cadence Weapon
Great hip-hop track.

#16 Love In This Club – Usher
Trippin’ video and great synth hip-hoppin’ track
Heck never thought Keri Hilson is hot in that video.
Great song to dance to.

#17 Dancer – Woodhands
Amazing electro dance track by Woodhands.
When they sing this song live, everyone goes crazy.

#18 Girls by Sugababes
Fun dance track

#19 Another Day by Jamie Lidell.
What a uplifting and happy song. Video abit weird. Have to say his album JIM is fun with lots of funk, soul and rock

#20 Dance Wiv Me by Dizzee Rascal feat. Calvin Harris and Chrome
He finally got his first #1 single in the UK and great summer dance track.

Shows I’ve attended
#1 Osheaga Festival in Montreal.
Highlights: Plants and Animals, Metric (short set due to Spirtualizes playing a long set), Sharon Jones and The Daptones (Mostly heard them while waiting for Cat Power), Cat Power, The Killers (amazing!), The National Parcs, Jamie Lidell, The Black Keys, Matt Costa, CSS, Broken Social Scene, Duffy (WOW!) and Chromeo.
All I have to say why I chose this as my #1 pick because I was in music heaven and got to see some of my favorite acts play. Some new ones and it was an amazing time.

#2 Basia Bulat and Katie Stelmanis on March 27, 2008 at Zaphods.
