Tops – Sugar at the Gate [Review]

, , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Montreal Tops seems the be the most underrated band at the moment.
Having three albums under their belt through Arbutus Records.
Their recent being Sugar at the Gate which was recorded in California than in Montreal.
Sugar at the Gates is 10 tracks of moody laid-back 80s poppy rock vibe.
I felt like this album had a sadder tone lyrically since some of the songs had a break-up feel to it.
While their last album Picture You Staring had a mix up of upbeat and slowness of Pop music.
Since they don’t have a track similar to Outside where you want to do some dance and think Top Gun.
Sugar at the Gate is a stronger album with it’s output with their musicality and lyrics.
One of my favorite albums to get in a sunny dreamy mood.

Best tracks:

  • Further
  • Petal
  • Dayglo Bimbo
  • Cutlass Cruiser
  • I Just Wanna Make You Real

I’d give Sugar at the Gate:

Hard Science – Dreaming in Stereo [Review]

Ottawa musician and visual artist Hard Science has finally dropped the long awaited full-length album called Dreaming in Stereo.
The album was 9 years in the making and all the all blood, sweat and tears has come out.
Lots of great vocal collaborations from Theaterina and Olexandra from The Peptides.
It is a mix of DIY experimental Electro-Dance and 80s New Wave pop music.
Sometimes I felt like listening to background music to some video game.
Nice album to get on vinyl which you can get on analogkitchun records
Best tracks:

  • Dreaming in Stereo
  • Summer’s Over, Autumn Begins
  • Worthy Companion
  • J.P.4.A.R.P.
  • When Things Just Don’t Go Your Way

I’d give Dreaming in Stereo:

Japanese Breakfast – Boyish [Listen]

Today, Japanese Breakfast has shared “Boyish,” the latest from her upcoming album, Soft Sounds From Another Planet.
“Of the song, Michelle Zauner says “Craig Hendrix [band member and the album’s co-producer] and I wanted to produce this sort of grandiose Roy Orbison-esque ballad. We wanted the chorus to have big arrangements, lots of harmonies and synth strings, to create a really sweeping, melancholic effect that mirrored the nature of the lyrics. The song is about jealousy and sexual incompetence. It’s about feeling ugly.”

Good Kid – Witches [Listen]

Good Kid is a Toronto band of friends who met in German class.
They all like three of the same things: Music, computers and video games – the latter two being a constant inspiration for music writing and jam sessions.
They are full-time software developers, but still write music, play shows and create Pokémon-themed videos for their Facebook followers.

Witches as a track is about the hikes Nick (he’s in the band!) and his friend Tom have taken through the UK.
The title is inspired by a small forest close to Treffgarn, Wales that is nightly visited by a tremendous flock of birds.
The only logical explanation for this occurrence is of course – witches.

Young Guv – Traumatic [Music Video]

, , , , , , , ,

Today, Young Guv is back with a new track and music video called Traumatic.
Traumatic is taken from the upcoming 7-inch out this Friday on Slumberland Records.
Now, after a rather twisted 2016 of travel, change and discovery, Guv is back with this new single “Traumatic”. Recorded at home on trusty 1/4″ analog tape, it’s a self-reflective and personal audio snapshot that contrasts nicely with the loud ‘n’ gritty “Ripe 4 Luv.” “Traumatic” rides a bubbling programmed groove, blending echo-laden vocals with understated rhythm guitar and a catchy synth hook into a magical new wave roots-pop amalgam.
Have a look at the 80s inspired sounding track.

Toronto’s new wave pop trio Bravestation is back with a summer single.
“Up For You” is a soulful, retro inspired track that’s equal parts soothing and upbeat.
Working towards their highly anticipated full-length debut, the band wanted to put out a seasonal offering for fans “to turn up to while day drinking on the lake in a boat or lounging/partying by the pool with friends”.
Have a listen to Up For You.
