Chad VanGaalen – Light Information [Review]

You can call Chad VanGaalen crazy and quirky, but he sure puts out a fine record.
Light Information which is his sixth album on Subpop for the USA and Flemish Eye for Canada.
It follows the same formula from previous albums like Shrink Dust and Diaper Island with its lo-fi, glitchy and psychedelic pop rock music with lyrics that can masquerade as something dark.
Does it break any ground? I don’t know, Chad is Chad.

Light Information is listening through a journey of what the future brings us into this bleak and crazy world we are living.

Best tracks:

  • Mind Hijackers Curse
  • Mystery Elements
  • Old Heads
  • Faces Lit
  • Pine and Clover

I’d give Light Information:
/10.

Belle Game – Fear / Nothing [Review]

The Belle Game has been one of my favorite Canadian acts in recent years.
With their lovely indie pop rock music from their 2014’s debut Ritual Tradition Habit.
Now three years later they finally dropped the second album called Fear / Nothing and on the Arts & Crafts label.
Fear / Nothing is another change with the band with them ditching the pop rock vibe and more into the sonic synth pop vibe similar from Braids.
A more dark and maturing record.
This time they have it going for them!
The Belle Game @ Pop Montreal 2016
Best tracks:

  • Shine
  • Spirit
  • Yuh
  • Low
  • I Want Nothing

I’d give Fear / Nothing:
/10

The dust has settled and taken a long time to process this.
When bands and artist go through an evolution, it can be either a good or bad thing.
Case in point with Arcade Fire on their fifth album Everything Now.
It’s a mix of disco-y dance alterna-pop music.
Is it a masterpiece from their first three albums?
Let’s not get too carried away.
While there were high expectations but to myself, it seemed more of a low expectation.
Not sure what they were trying to pull on Everything Now.
Wanting to make a so bad that it is a good record.
The only outstanding track is the lead title track which everyone hailed as a cross between ABBA and LCD Soundsystem.
Production wise is nice but vocal wise left my head scratching, is Win trying to distort his sound?
It is not one of those albums you would listen to but probably live it would sound better.
Fun album – yes!
Overall message on the album – Huh?
This made me want to go back and just listen to Funeral and Neon Bible.
Give it more time and maybe I will enjoy more!

Best tracks:

  • Everything Now
  • Signs of Life
  • Peter Pan
  • Electric Blue
  • Everything Now (Continued)

I’d give Everything Now:
/10

Alvvays – Antisocialites [Review]

Alot of albums are dropping on September 8, 2017.
This is one album I am so excited for.
The long awaited second album by https://alvvays.bandcamp.comAlvvays called Antisocialites.
It’s been three years when the band released their self-titled debut album and waiting for something new.
The wait is over and on Antisocialites with 10 tracks of upbeat and catchy melodies with the unique songwriting of Molly Rankin.
There are the upbeat energetic tracks of Plimsoll Punks, Lollipop Ode To Jim and Saved By A Waif.
To mellow track Dreams Tonite which makes you want down the streets while waiting for the bus at night.
For a Canadian band, this album is very reminiscent to (I can think of the top of my head) Cocteau Twins, The Breeders, The Cure and Camera Obsura.
Meaning it sounds so British fuzz jangle pop!
While it will be one of my top picks for “Best of 2017” albums so far.

Best tracks:

  • In Undertow
  • Dreams Tonite
  • Plimsoll Punks
  • Lollipop Ode To Jim
  • Forget About Life

I’d give Antisocialites:

You can say it is a hommage to the famous Disney World ride.
It is a new track by the Toronto band Rosedale.
They have a new EP “Again” dropping very soon.
The leading single Space Mountain has that 90s alter-pop rock vibe to it.

Playing House of Targ on September 7, 2017

Apparently, the email I got from Nick Ferrio went into the spam pile.
I am really liking this track from his upcoming album Soothsayer.
This is a big change from Nick, moving away from the folk country music.
Getting into 70s power-pop sound reminiscent of Elvis Costello and T-Rex.
Have a listen to Soothsayer, album comes out on September 29, 2017.
